What is digital radiography?

Digital radiography is one of the advanced dental technologies we use at Great Grins to provide the most effective, efficient dental care possible. Also called digital X-rays, digital radiography allows our dentist to take high-quality, digital images of your teeth, jawbone, and the surrounding structures. Because this process involves using a digital sensor rather than traditional X-ray film, it is fast and comfortable. We can then display the X-ray images on our monitors almost immediately, and we are able to easily expand the images or adjust the light/dark contrast to better evaluate your oral health. Using digital radiography in Richmond, Kentucky, Dr. Susan A. Vanstone can identify dental problems such as:

  • Bone loss
  • Tooth decay (cavities) between teeth
  • Infection in the tooth nerve
  • Developmental abnormalities
  • Tumors
  • Improper tooth root positioning
  • Abscesses and cysts

In addition, we often use digital X-rays to plan several types of dental treatment, including tooth extraction, dental implants, crowns, and more.

What is a panoramic X-ray?

Regular bitewing X-rays give our dentist a view of a few teeth and the bone that supports them. In order to gain a more comprehensive understanding of your smile, we may recommend a panoramic X-ray, which allows us to assess the health of all of your teeth and jawbone in a single image.
