What is a sealant?

A sealant is one of the preventive dental services we provide at Great Grins to keep your smile healthy. A dental sealant is a very thin coating of resin that is painted onto the chewing surface of the teeth, usually the molars and premolars (back teeth). This coating blocks out food particles, bacteria, and plaque from becoming trapped in the natural pits and grooves on the surface of the tooth, which helps to prevent tooth decay. The dental sealant also forms a smooth surface on the tooth, which allows you to clean your teeth more effectively with normal brushing.

Do I need sealants?

Our dentist may recommend a dental sealant in Richmond, Kentucky, to keep your teeth free from decay. We most often suggest sealants for children when their permanent molars and premolars come in to protect them from the effects of decay. In certain cases, Dr. Susan A. Vanstone may also recommend sealants for adult patients. Because sealants are made of a clear or tooth-colored resin material, they blend in beautifully with your smile so no one will notice them. In addition, the process for placing dental sealants is fast and painless, so you can feel confident that your visit to our office will be quick and pleasant.
